Flipbook Films Presents: Shirkers (2018)

  • Glasgow Zine Library 16 Nicholson Street Glasgow United Kingdom (map)

We are excited to present the closing film in our 'Cinematic Documentaries' screening series, with a zine by Yi Ping Tan.

In the summer of 1992, teenage friends Sandi Tan, Jasmine Ng and Sophie Siddique dedicated themselves to shooting what would have been Singapore’s first road movie - until Georges Cardona, a mysterious American man who was both mentor and director to the film, absconded with all 27 reels. Two decades later, Sandi receives the reels from Cardona’s widow.

Shirkers follows Sandi, now a novelist based in L.A., as she revisits Singapore and memories of making the film in hopes to unveil the motivations of Cardona. In her journey to do so, Shirkers experiences a rebirth.

=========================

Our 'Cinematic Documentaries' series is comprised of three films that form part of the growing practice of documentaries using a greater focus on form and visuals to tell factual stories. The films included and authors of the zines are:

- The Possibilities Are Endless, Adam Dransfield

- The Act of Killing, Arianne Maki

- Shirkers, Yi Ping Tan

Flipbook Films is a new film club/series of screenings which pairs each film with a zine made especially for the screening. Each zine acts as an accompaniment and an aide-memoire to the film being screened. Our intention is that the zine will stimulate discussion by communicating the ideas and moments from the film that have stayed with the author, as well as any contextual information which they feel is relevant. Each zine is individually made for each film which is chosen by the author. We would love to hear from you if you have a film you would like to communicate your love for in the medium of zine!
