Only the Ghosts of Riots: A Montage Writing Workshop

Please note: this event will be held in person at Glasgow Zine Library.

Emerging from a winter of discontent into a hot spring, this workshop will look at how the periodic eruption - and sometimes strange absence - of rioting has shaped Glasgow over the centuries.

In the session we will look at Black Audio Film Collective’s radical approach to capturing riots, and the ghosts of riots, in Handsworth Songs (1986). Using some of the same techniques of montage and fragmentation, the session will work through a series of writing prompts drawing on Chartist court transcripts, 19th century diaries, eyewitness riot accounts, Thatcher-era documentaries, police handbooks and contemporary newspaper articles.

Collectively we will create our own documentary poems, mash-ups of riots past and failed, and maybe still to come…

No writing experience necessary!
