Remember this day? Teasing out digital memories with conductive ink

  • Glasgow Zine Library 32-34 Albert Road Glasgow, Scotland, G42 8DN United Kingdom (map)

Please note: this is a two part event. Please make sure you can attend both sessions.

Part 1: Monday 26th Feb, 6-8pm
Part 2: Monday 4th March, 6-8pm

In this inky two-parter zine-making workshop with Lil of No Bindings you will learn how to use conductive ink to make interactive audio-visual zines and then have time to play around and experiment with this exciting medium!

Part 1: Monday 26th Feb, 6-8pm

"Tangible things are fast disappearing. Information that was once stored on paper is now stored digitally. The push and pull between paper, and its reassuring qualities is heightened in our increasingly transient society." - Savinder Bual, 9 Notes

In this workshop, we will use conductive ink to make an interactive zine that takes a digital memory from our phones and places it into the world around us, through paper and projections.

We'll each work with one video from our phone archive. Using simple writing, drawing and collaging exercises, we'll create a double-page spread to go deeper into that video memory. We'll upload our chosen video onto the circuit board. Then, via the conductive ink, when we touch the pages, our chosen videos will play. We’ll collect the spreads together into a zine to remember the workshop, which you'll get after the workshop.

Things we'll reflect on in the workshop:

Do our digital memories become more emotive when they're not accessed through screen-based touch?
How does it feel to be so selective when we have access to such an abundance of media on our devices?
How does it feel to project, play out loud, exhibit our personal media?

Part 2: Monday 4th March, 6-8pm
Follow-on open session

Following on from Remember this day?, this will be an open session for folks to play with the possibilities of conductive ink. You might want to ink up a collage, drawing, writing or posters so that it plays a video or soundbite of your choice when you touch it. There will be some handouts with mini project suggestions. Lil will be on hand if you get stuck or want to chat about the software, hardware and creative possibilities.

You will need to bring your smartphone with you. If you do not have a smartphone please bring videos and images in digital form (i.e. on a USB stick) or email to glasgowzinelibrary@gmail.com in advance of the workshop.
Please also choose a video that you would like to work with, and are happy to explore and share in a group setting. When choosing your video you might like to use the prompt: If you could only keep one video from your phone/digital cloud storage, what would it be?

About the facilitator:

I'm Lil! Glasgow became my home in November 2022. I live for building creative projects with other people. Weaving threads of connection is my jam. For around 7 years, I've been doing this through a pretty fluid form of publishing: mixing up workshops, print and audio via my indie press, No Bindings. Nowadays, I'm playing more with archives and community tech. When I'm not doing this, I spend a lot of time in libraries. I work at Glasgow Women's Library facilitating the Readers of Colour sessions amongst other programmes and activities. I also volunteer at Glasgow Zine Library and Woodlands Community Anti-Racist Library.
