(Smoke)screens or paper? Zines for Climate Change

  • Glasgow Zine Library 32-34 Albert Road Glasgow, Scotland, G42 8DN United Kingdom (map)

Please note: this event will be held in person.

A picture may be worth a thousand words…but is it worth the planet? The dawn of the digital age brought with it the removal of physical barriers to communication, connection and the sharing of information – but it also ushered in the social media revolution and an ever growing reliance on digital ways of working. The industry has forced many creatives to exhibit their works via social media, capitalising on the seemingly harmless habit of spending hours scrolling online. However, when it comes to digital emissions, rethinking our relationship to social media and the internet could be one of the most important individual changes which can create an international impact.

Zines for Change invites you to consider and learn about digital emissions before sharing your learnings by making a zine, creating a tangible resource to share further post-event. In a world of overconsumption and mass production, Zines for Change will focus on how to harness the power of small steps to create the largest impact, together. We'll consider our digital footprint as a whole, from the personal social side to the business of websites, communication channels and even getting your daily news. Climate action demands international collaboration and conversation via digital channels, and as such it is vital we understand how we can best minimise our digital emissions whilst maximising our potential for collaboration and inciting genuine change.

Through the exploration of the zine format, we aim to come together as a group of creatives and people working with climate to explore one of today’s most pressing issues and reflect on the sustainability of our own workings. Raising awareness of climate change through the lens of digital emissions is vital – join us at Zines for Change to talk through this before exploring the history of zine culture, and learning how to make your own; spreading the word as we use those small works of art to continue a much larger conversation.
