Join Mo’min Swaitat and Palestine Sound Archive for a screening of Arna’s Children, followed by a Q&A.

Arna's Children is a film by Juliano Mer Khamis:

Yussef committed a suicide attack in 2001. Ashraf was killed by the Israeli army in 2002. Alaa led a group of resistance fighters to his death in 2003.

Director, Juliano Mer Khamis, who documented Yussef, Ashraf and Alaa as promising child actors in the theatre group he founded with his mother Arna, returns to Jenin Refugee Camp in April 2002, to see what happened to the children he knew and loved.

Juliano Mer Khamis is the son of Arna Mer, a Jewish woman, and Saliba Khamis, a Palestinian father. Juliano was a leading actor, director, sinker, and founder of The Freedom Theatre, before he was politically assassinated on the doorstep of the theatre on 4th April 2011.

During the first Intifada, his mother Arna established an alternative educational programme in Jenin Refugee Camp to compensate for the virtual collapse of the formal education system due to the Israeli occupation. Among its activities, was the ‘Stone Theatre’ – a performance workshop that Juliano directed. Eight years after Arna’s death, and five years after the theatre project ended, Juliano returns to the Camp to discover the tragic story of “Arna’s children.”

Followed by a Q&A with Mo’min Swaitat, one of the second generation of the theatre actors at the Freedom Theatre and Juliano’s students, and a cousin of Yussef Swaitat and Alla Al Sabaqh, who are featured in the documentary.
