Copyright and Zine Making

  • Glasgow Zine Library 32-34 Albert Road Glasgow, Scotland, G42 8DN United Kingdom (map)

Please note: this event will take place online.

Learn about how copyright law intersects with creative practices, including why copyright matters and what challenges it poses to creative practitioners.

This session will cover the fundamental aspects of copyright as relevant to zine making. It will help you identify the rules and tools you can use to protect your own work, as well as navigate content created by others, including seeking appropriate permissions and relying upon legally permitted uses.

The session will comprise a talk followed by questions and discussion with the participants. All zine-makers are welcome. No prior knowledge of copyright is required.

Unsure what to pay for Pay-What-You-Can events? Find our guide here.

Please note: we can only issue refunds requested 72 hours before the workshop begins.

About Smita:

Dr Smita Kheria is a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Edinburgh. She combines legal expertise in copyright with socio-legal research on intellectual property law in the ‘real world’. Her research focuses on how copyright intersects with the everyday lives of creative practitioners including writers, illustrators, musicians, visual artists, and performers. She promotes Intellectual Property awareness through talks and workshops for creative communities and organisations (e.g. Edinburgh Fringe Central, Dance Base, Talbot Rice Gallery, Society of Young Publishers) and public engagement events (Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas shows at Edinburgh Festival Fringe).
