PULP: Recycling & Creativity Through Papermaking

  • PULP Paper Arts Workshop 77 Hanson Street Glasgow, Scotland, G31 2HF United Kingdom (map)

This workshop will take place in person at PULP Paper Arts Workshop.

A hands-on workshop focused on papermaking as a medium for recycling and producing creative outcomes.

Using gathered materials like redundant packaging, printed papers and recyclable art paper, participants will learn how to recycle fibres and form new papers, perhaps for drawing, hand printing or to use as covers for limited edition paper publications.

Creative decisions and techniques can be explored using a variety of pulps, which in turn influences the individuality of your outcomes.

During the workshop participants will produce a small bundle of unique papers from recycled fibre, exploring texture, tone and fragments of edited text. You will also experience producing some larger sheets, making use of the fabulous equipment available at PULP.

The workshop setting provides an opportunity to work individually on your activity and as part of a collective effort, sharing materials, space and assisting one another.

Participants may also gain sufficient experience and understanding of the papermaking process to enable future making on a small scale at home or studio setting.

About PULP and Alison:

PULP, a dedicated papermaking resource, was set-up in March 2005 by Alison Newman after many years of study and experience of working within participatory art settings. Qualifications include a BA(hons) in Fine Art Printmaking and M.Phil Art & Design in Organisational Contexts, both from Glasgow School of Art.

The M.Phil research outcome ‘Artist as Facilitator within Multiple Settings’ involved an evaluation of papermaking as a therapeutic, participatory art medium and I have facilitated projects for many organisations over the past 25 years, with professional development taken at Awagami, Tokushima to study Japanese papermaking.

As an artist, I am inspired by biology and the patterns found within nature and papermaking satisfies this interest well. A result of the close involvement with the fibres, cutting and making stages of a working day, my artwork is focused on the process and materials used within hand papermaking.
